The name Sumakh on the one hand refers to an origin: the Caucasian town of Shumakha (southern Daghestan) is located about a hundred kilometres west of Baku.
On the other hand, it is also the name given to a specific weaving technique for kilims closely related to other Caucasian fabrics such as Verneh and Sileh, in which the weft thread is wrapped around one or more warp threads.
Today, the name Sumakh is also used in other regions and countries to refer to this way of working. The name is then added to the origin of the rugs.
