Situated in the heart of the Feraghan area, the town of Sarouk has built a strong reputation in the world of Persian carpets by consistently producing very high quality, using excellent wool, and rigorously controlling every detail up to the finishing.
Carpets from this region (Sarouk, Mahal, Lilihan, Serabend, etc.) were sold in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mainly in the bazaar of Arak (formerly Sultanabad).
In this region, the Turkish (symmetrical) knot was, and still is, the most widely in use.
Towards the end of the 19th century, an acceleration in production and major orders from the United States somewhat weakened this level of excellence. Weavers in the early years of the 20th century gave in to the temptation to respond readily to this continuing demand. Producing a very large quantity of pieces in red tones that an elaborate wash made "fashionable", Saruk was content to produce, for the most part, only "American" pieces, neglecting to produce new patterns and innovate their style.
